Introducing Garden

Garden Finance provides one of the easiest ways for you to move between Bitcoin and WBTC (wrapped Bitcoin). This is the first of many dApps that highlight the type of experience enabled by the Catalog protocol.

How does it work?

Atomic swaps allow for trustless swaps between two parties entirely using blockchain contracts.

Garden leverages Catalog’s atomic swap technology to enable seamless conversions between BTC and WBTC. Atomic swaps are a decentralized method of exchanging assets directly between users, removing the need for a middleman. The execution of swaps is facilitated by Catalog resolvers, each equipped with an innovative zero-confirmation mechanism. This helps overcome a common challenge associated with atomic swaps – the requirement for both participants to remain online throughout the swapping period, often spanning up to 48 hours. This swapping mechanism is entirely open-source and audits can be found here.

How do I use it?

First visit garden.finance and connect your Web3 wallet. You will be asked to sign a message for authentication.

WBTC → BTC

  1. Enter the amount you wish to convert and specify the receiver’s Bitcoin address.
  2. Initiate the swap.
    • This will generate a one-time private key and atomic swap secret based on your signature and swap details.
  3. Once the order has been matched, submit the transaction to deposit WBTC to the atomic swap lock contract.
    • If a counterparty is not found, you will be able to withdraw your funds once the swap expires.
  4. Wait for your deposit to be confirmed.
    • Pro tip: with Catalog Wallet, you can skip this step.
  5. A Catalog Resolver deposits BTC to the atomic swap script address using your secret.
  6. Sign the message to claim your BTC.

BTC → WBTC

  1. Enter the amount you wish to convert and specify a refund address.
    • The refund address will be used to recover the deposit in case the swap is not completed.
  2. Initiate the swap.
    • This will generate a one-time private key and atomic swap secret based on your signature and swap details.
  3. Once the order has been matched, send the required amount to the given deposit address.
    • If a counterparty is not found, you will be able to withdraw your funds once the swap expires.
  4. Wait for your deposit to be confirmed.
    • Pro tip: with Catalog Wallet, you can skip this step.
  5. A Catalog Resolver deposits WBTC into the lock contract using your atomic swap secret.
  6. Submit the transaction to claim your WBTC.

What’s next?

Garden is an example of just one of the many kinds of Bitcoin-powered experiences Catalog makes possible. If you would like to keep up with any updates for Garden, you can find them on Twitter. This is just the beginning, so we are excited to see how else Catalog will bring Bitcoin to the decentralized web.
